To be honest, this film surprised me alot. I remember to have watched it when I was a freshman. Now, I'm a graduate and all details still stuck in my head. This film is based on a real case when a maid has killed her master, but was claimed to be possessed by evil spirit. Up to now, no one know what actually happened that day because Grace is the only one who is still alive. This make this case and this film become more mysterious.
I realise the thing covered the atmosphere of the whole film is the belief in God, not only the silk-stocking but also the lower class. They believe God is in everywhere to help them defeat the evil. This belief is set cleverly during the plot: When a person passes away (Grace's mom and Mary White), Grace (the heroine) always wanted to open the window for their souls to escape and go to heaven, or the dead would be stuck forever and become a devil; The noblewomen believed that the poor Grace was possessed by the devil which led to the evil spirit dismission at the end of the film; or A quick scene that Grace was abuse and tortured in mental hospital when they claimed that mental illness only occured because of ghost's control.
However, I think God is not the thing that make Grace become insane. From what I see, the death of Mary White is the root of everything and that is also the reason why Grace always see Mary. Mary was the first one having a close relationship with Grace when she once went out society for working. The world that Grace formed all from the stories that Mary told her. After Mary's death because of abortion, the world of Grace was shaking but she kept using stories to prop it up. Until Grace heard a completely different version of those stories from her new master, her world perfectly collasped.
In addition, the ready-abuse from people around Grace (her dad, the young master, the new master and Nancy-her new steward) really turned her into a real devil.
I freakingly love the ending. The letter Grace wrote for Dr. Simon, to tell her plans and show vague facts in the real case. The writter didn't try to put a clear ending but keep perfectly a mysterious question, and I appreaciate her work.
